  1. 1777-1855. British Radical politician. Born
  2. at Montrose, Scotland, he went to India as an
  3. army surgeon 1797, made a fortune, and on his
  4. return bought a seat in Parliament. In 1818
  5. he secured election as a Philosophic Radical
  6. and supported many progressive measures. His
  7. son Allan Octavian Hume (1829-1912) was
  8. largely responsible for the establishment of
  9. the Indian National Congress 1885.
